On July 5, 2024, Supreme Decree No. 50 of 2023, from the Ministry of the Environment, was published in the Official Gazette. This decree amends Supreme Decree No. 55 of 1994 from the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications, which establishes emission standards applicable to heavy motor vehicles.<\/p>\n
Specifically, it incorporates a single article into Supreme Decree No. 55, stipulating that heavy motor vehicles whose initial registration in the Motor Vehicle Registry of the Civil Registry is requested from the effective date of this article can only circulate in the country if they are mechanically capable of meeting the maximum emission levels for carbon monoxide (CO), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), total hydrocarbons (THC), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), particle mass, and particle number (PN).<\/p>\n
Thus, the provision specifies the maximum emission levels from the exhaust system, whose measurements will be carried out, as appropriate, according to standardized methods defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) or through the World Harmonized Transient Cycle (WHTC) or the World Harmonized Stationary Cycle (WHSC) as per Regulation (EC) No 595\/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council, concerning the approval of motor vehicles and engines regarding emissions from heavy vehicles (Euro VI) and access to vehicle repair and maintenance information.<\/p>\n
This regulation will come into effect 18 months from its publication in the Official Gazette, that is, on January 5, 2026.<\/p>\n
